We are so excited to begin telling you about Ayurveda! This ancient Indian practice has a major role in our lives and also our business.
What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda (pronounced ah-yer-vey-duh) is the ancient practice of medicine and meditation based on experience and observation. Ayurveda is a combination of two Sanskrit words ayur (life) and veda (knowledge) and is more than 3,000 years old.
The practice of Ayurveda looks at each person as a individual – no two people are treated the same. Each person has 5 elements of their bodies; ether, air, fire, water, and earth. These 5 elements combine in groups to create doshas. There are 3 doshas; Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Doshas control a different part or system(s) of the body. Each of us has different proportions of each dosha, making each of us unique. And most importantly, those differing portions make treatment of ailments unique too.
How Does Juice Play a Role?
In the Ayurvedic belief system, food is life giving. Because of that incredibly important role, what, how and when you eat is extremely important. Food temperature, type and where you eat are all vital factors. At the core, the belief is that not only do we need to consume nourishing foods, but we need to do it mindfully. Enjoying a bottle of fresh, cold pressed juice and taking the time to think about how it tastes, feels and how it is feeding your body is an easy way to practice Ayurveda.
In addition to the daily ritual of mindfully drinking juice, the juice cleanse is another example of how juice plays an important role in Ayurvedic practice. Imbalanced doshas can create a build up of toxins in our systems. Using a juice cleanse to remove the toxins is a step in the right direction of finding our own personal balance. In addition, it furthers the practice of sipping and nourishing our systems mindfully.
As we both proceed with our study of Ayurveda and Holistic Nutrition, we will continue to share our thoughts and observations with you. We’re excited that you’re on this journey with us and The Green Farm Juicery!
